NAACP and Greenville’s Mayor answer to controversial social media write-up

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – The Greenville Nationwide Affiliation for the Improvement of Coloured Individuals has responded to the city’s controversial Black Background month submit shared this week. The publish highlighted Greenville’s Mayor, and shared some of his experiences in the course of school integration.

Greenville’s NAACP held a push meeting on Friday, expressing considerations.

City of Greenville’s spokesperson Beth Brotherton took total duty in an apology on Tuesday, saying it was a poor final decision. She also stated the mayor wasn’t knowledgeable of it, and that the statements came from a 2020 documentary.

“That’s not sufficient. That’s not heading to fly,” Flemming claimed. “Whites did not go by what we went via. They didn’t working experience what we expert, so why would you ask a white about it,” he said.

Flemming mentioned he had a meeting with Brotherton just before the press conference about the submit.

“The communication that we had–with all of the problems that we’re acquiring with the town. Black contractors are not getting hired. Homes are wanted in black communities. Black individuals are not currently being employed at the City of Greenville. There are a number of issues, and I’m asking the question–you don’t feel it’s distasteful to occur out here now and to existing this,” Flemming mentioned.

Nevertheless, group leaders said this speaks to a deeper problem of black voices staying silenced.
